Propane Gas Facts

Advantages of Propane:

  • Propane is a clean fuel and is much better for the environment than many other energy sources. In fact, propane gas is one of the clean-burning fuels named in the 1990 Clean Air Act as well as the National Energy Policy Act of 1992.
  • Propane is safe to use, and there are documented statistics to back this up.
  • Propane heating equipment is designed to operate efficiently.
  • Propane is also portable and it can go anywhere, even where natural gas lines can’t go.
  • Propane heats water at one-half the cost of electricity.
  • Propane gas is produced in America . This is a fact that keeps thousands of your neighbors and friends employed producing America ‘s own energy source.
  • Propane has a wide variety of uses such as heating, water heating, cooking, clothes drying, swimming pool water heating, hot tub and sauna heating and emergency generators, and vehicles.

What is Propane?

  • Propane, or liquefied petroleum gas (LP gas), is one of the nation’s most versatile sources of energy.
  • Propane is called a fossil fuel because it is composed of the remains of plants and animals that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.
  • Propane can be either a liquid or a gas. At normal atmospheric pressure and temperature, it is a non-toxic, colorless and odorless gas. When pressurized, propane becomes a liquid that vaporizes into a clean-burning gas when released from its storage container. Propane is 270 times more compact as a liquid than a gas, making it easy to store and transport as a liquid.
  • As opposed to relying on foreign sources, approximately 90 percent of the United States propane supply is produced here, not abroad and 97% being produced in North America.
  • For years, families and business located on the gas main have counted on clean, dependable natural gas for heating, water heating, cooking and clothes drying.

Residential Uses:

  • People use propane for heating and cooling homes, generators, heating water, cooking, refrigeration, drying clothes, barbecuing, swimming pools, lighting, and for their gas fireplaces.
  • More and more homes are being built to use propane. And where soil conditions or terrain make buried tanks impractical, above ground tanks are used.
  • Home buyers prefer propane gas because it is clean, reliable and far more economical than electricity. All the benefits of gas are available wherever and whenever the home buyer wants them whether it is a new or existing home.

Commercial Uses:

Hotels, motels and restaurants use propane in the same way a homeowner does. For example, it is used for heating and cooling air, heating water, cooking, refrigeration, drying clothes, barbecuing and lighting. Industrial uses such as space heating, brazing, soldering, cutting, heat treating, annealing, and vulcanizing are also run by propane gas.

Recreational Uses:

  • Propane gas is being used by millions of recreation vehicle owners and camping fans everywhere because it is a clean-burning fuel and it is easy to use.
  • Propane gas powers gas grills, outdoor gas lights, mobile homes and RV appliances, generators, and heaters.
  • Millions of people are already enjoying the benefits of using propane to safely and economically fuel heaters for their swimming pools, saunas, patios, and whirlpools.
